Thai pay-TV provider TrueVisions, part of communications group True, is investing over THB 2 billion to introduce HD set-top boxes to replace older set-top boxes over the next two years.

The new set-top boxes will be launched next month and the company expects to sell 500,000 units, The Nation reports citing chief executive Suphachai Chearavanont. Currently, HD content is available only on TrueVisions' cable system but the company plans to expand HD content to its satellite platform as well. The new set-top boxes will offer the HD 1080i standard, Dolby 5.1 audio technology, a personal video recorder, video on demand, and an application to control the device from mobile communications devices.

The new set-top box will also allow TrueVisions to pursue additional revenue from value added services such as e-commerce, interactive content, and customised advertising.
