EchoStar Asia Multimedia, a joint ventrue of US-based satellite TV broadcaster EchoStar, has been undertaking small-scale trial broadcast of satellite TV service in the Taiwan market and may kick off commercial operation in the second quarter, with Taiwan being its first overseas market outside North America, according to company COO Steve Skalski.

EchoStar and Hong Kong-based Asia Satellite Telecommunications (AsiaSat) established EchoStar Asia Multimedia in June 2009 in Hong Kong, with each holding a 50% stake, according to the website of Asia Satellite Telecommunications Holdings, of which AsiaSat is a wholly owned subsidiary.

The choice of Taiwan as the first overseas market beyond North America is because the TV market in Taiwan is characteristically similar to that in the US and in addition, Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) is actively boosting TV digitization, Skalski pointed out.

EchoStar Asia Multimedia plans to operate 25-35 HD (high definition) channels in the Taiwan market, Skalski indicated.
